The
Native American Theme
The Y-Indian Guide programs are based upon the strong qualities of
the Native American culture - life -dignity, patience, endurance,
spirituality, harmony with nature and concern for the family.
The past and present
cultures of Native American Indians can challenge a father or mother
to be aware of his or her role as a parent, guide, friend and
example for a son or daughter and help develop the child's natural
curiosity and enthusiasm.
Through the purposeful parent-child experience of the Y-Indian Guide
programs, the YMCA provides parent and child with the opportunity to
build childhood memories while recognizing the contributions of
Native American values to our nation and their appreciation for the
well being of the family.

Y-USA demonstrates respect for Native American
Cultures
The YMCA Indian Guides program is dropping the word "Indian" from
its name.
The decision, approved by the YMCA national board in September, was one
of a series of decisions. They want a new name and theme. Time unknown, but
soon. Until then, the board asks the Y's to use the name Y Guides and to
continue offering the program using the resource, friends always.
More about this can be viewed at
www.ymcausa.org/programs/family/yindian_guides_program.htm or by contacting Sue
Jarocki at 800-872-9622 ext. 8662
The Y also wants to extend the program, by encouraging Aunts and
Uncles, guardians and special friends to participate in the program. This now
will make the Native American Theme no longer the focus of the program. The
focus will be on parent-child relationships. Welcome to the millennium
