Smoke Signals

The Year of the Eagle Draws to a Close!

How, How Prairie and Kiowa Nation! Welcome to our final smoke signal for the year of the Eagle. This year has gone by real quick; it seems like yesterday I sent out my first e-mail to welcome all of you to our events this year. Do you remember all the great times we shared together this year? Since our start at the Fourth of July parade, we have had so many great events. I can’t believe that we are almost done. It was so much fun being the Nation chief this year, and having all of the great braves and princesses enjoying themselves at our monthly events. Here is a recap of what we did:

In July, we started with the Apache sponsored fourth of July parade. The weather was perfect.  In August, we went to a flyers game. Boy was it hot; you just can't beat fun at the ole ballpark. We had our great fall campout at Hastings, which included a costume party, swimming and the best food at a campout in years. Boy did it rain; our medman was not bribed enough that weekend. The girls never even cared about the rain, all had fun anyway. The circus came to town in November. Animals, daring events and clowns made all of the girls have fun. December was the annual holiday event; we all saw what the Native Americans actually are like. They told of their history, past and present, and they showed us Indian dances, and we helped sponsor a food pantry and gave gifts to children less fortunate than ours. In January we had Disney on Ice, Toy Story II, at the Allstate Arena. Front row seats. February, the month of all good events. We had a gym/swim at the Y, Charlotte’s web and Pizza Bingo. In March we had our winter campout in Kettle Moraine and Lake Long resort. The weather was perfect, as well as the fun and food; the girls did not want to leave. In April we had a bowling event, and our first cardboard boat regatta. In May we had Pinewood derby races, where every girl was a winner.

Our final destination will be our tent out at Millbrook campground. We will have a carnival atmosphere and there will be something new to do every 30 minutes. Yogi’s birthday is celebrated this weekend too. At this campout we will be merging with a bunch of great dads and daughters from the Kiowa Nation. I would like to say How How and welcome into our nation family. Our campout will be the first of many together.

Our next year’s patches will be the Campout of the Hunting moon and Year of Unity. At the last longhouse, everyone mentioned how many leafs we have on our vests, so we decided on a September moon. We have to thank our Tally keeper Ed Friman for thinking up the idea for our year patch. With the events of September 11 in the past, we can all look to the future and believe we can overlook failure and gain strength in unity. The year of Unity is a great idea; we can always be reminded that our daughters need our help to lead them to a strong future. Together there is nothing we can not do. In the end, the Indian Princess program should give the princesses memories and beliefs that no matter what they do, we (the dads) will always be there for them. I hope what we did this year, helped in the positive development of all of our futures.

With this campout, my year will draw to a close. I would like to thank all of my council members: Mark Baich, Brian Marks, Jim Driscoll, Pete Mayhew, Larry Mohr, Ed Friman and Ken Wood. I also want to thank the Tribal chiefs: Terry Benz, Rob Hadley, Jim Litwin, Bruno Zaucha and of course Tom Fisher. All of these members put in a ton of work to help organize the year. I have been very lucky with my council; all of the members have been very helpful. If you enjoyed this years events, thank them, and if you think you have what it takes to be involved, come to any longhouse. If you cannot attend one soon, let your chief know. When you look back on this year, remember that all the good times were made possible by braves volunteering to steer the nation. Every dad on the council put in their very best effort to make our events the best and most fun. Please consider volunteering your time for the Prairie Nation. I guarantee you will feel it is worthwhile!

I hope Big Thunder Wolf can find a council that can create a year, like the one we had. I thoroughly enjoyed leading the nation this year and I look forward to my role as Sachem leading us in a few campfire songs next year.

And now, may the Great Spirit, of all great spirits, be with you, now, and forever!

Spring Campout:

Campout of the THUNDER MOON

Millbrook Jellystone Campground

Get ready to have a great time at the Spring Campout at Fitzpatrick’s Millbrook Jellystone Campground in Millbrook, Illinois.  Carnival Style Games are a small part of the fun to be had at the Campout of the Thunder Moon sponsored by the WUKI tribe.  Med-Man, please do what you need to do to make this Spring campout drier than the last six.

The campout officially starts on Saturday, but for those of you who want to get a head start, you are able to arrive Friday evening and camp out Friday night at the campground for no extra cost!  You are on your own for dinner, but the campground offers food delivery to your site.  Whenever you arrive, make sure you are at the flag raising at 10:00 am Saturday Morning!  See the full schedule on the next page.

When you arrive, you should check in with the WUKI.  Look for their table when you arrive near the entrance.  Our nation(s) are in sites 1001-1021, 1101-1115 and 301-312.  These will be assigned by tribe, so make sure that you are in the correct group of sites for your tribe.

Saturday lunch will be provided by the nation.  There will be a tie-die craft event.  Bring a t-shirt for your daughter.  Afterwards, there will be carnival style games.  A number of tarps have been rented to provide shelter in case the med man lets us down and it rains.

Millbrook is located Southwest of the Chicago Suburbs. To get to the campground Take I-55 South to Route 126.  Go 15 Miles west on Route 126 until you get to Route 71.  Go 7 Miles South West on Route 71 until you get to Millbrook Rd.  Turn Right onto Millbrook Road.  See the map provided below.   Additional information about the park can be found on the web site at http://www.jellystonechicago.com/

Annual Patch and Fall Campout Patch

Contest Rules

Patch Design Eligibility

• Any princess in grades K through 5 is eligible to draw a patch.

• Girls in grades 6 and older are eligible to draw a patch for the “Masters” category

• If a K through 5 princess has her patch selected for either a campout or “Year Of” patch, she is ineligible to submit a patch for the next three campouts.  This ensures that everyone gets a fair chance to have her patch selected. She IS however, eligible to keep submitting her designs in the “Masters” category.

Patch Requirements

• Use the front of a paper plate to design the patch

• On the back of the plate, put the princess name and her tribe

• The design can include black and six additional colors

• Glitter is not allowed, as it cannot be reproduced as a patch

Required elements

(using this year’s themes as illustrations)

Campout of the Hunting Moon

Fall 2002

Year of Unity

Prairie Nation

2002 – 2003

The winning princess may add her initials after the judging occurs.

Judging the Patches

• All plates must be given to the Talleykeeper by 5:00 pm on the Saturday of the Campout.

• Judging will take place immediately before dinner (exact time to be announced during morning messages)

• Electioneering is prohibited

• To avoid electioneering, girls will be called up for plate judging by grades, not tribes.  K and First Grade will be called up first.  Then second and third graders.  Finally fourth graders and beyond.

• The plates will be separated by “Masters” versus the patch plates and each princess can vote once in each category

• The Talleykeeper or designate is responsible for keeping track of votes

Winning Plates

• The winning plate in the patch categories will have their design made into a patch for the next campout.  At that campout, a framed copy of the design and a copy of the completed patch will be presented to the princess.

• The winning plate in the Masters category will receive an immediate prize or suitable award

Upcoming Summer and Fall Events

There will be events this summer including the Arlington Heights Fourth of July parade.  More details will be provided at the campout, check the web site or check with your chief.
