Owl Moon, Nation Chief of the mighty Buehler YMCA Indian Guides Kickapoo Nation (Algonquin Federation) could never quite remember all the myriad items needed at a campout.  Using many resources (friends, Internet, experience) he prepared the following not

altogether-comprehensive checklist.  If you find there are things that should be added, please do so and pass the updated list back to your chief for submission to the Nation.  Future braves will be in your debt.

Common Camp Out Checklist

ó        Registration form

ó        Mark name on all items clearly (jackets, hats, gloves, frisbees, water guns all look alike)

ó        Magic Markers

ó        Personal medications

ó        Bandages, first aid kit (antibiotic ointment such as Bacitracin)

ó        Insect repellent

ó        Insect sting relief medication

ó        Face cloths, face towels, soap, toothbrushes/paste, combs, brushes, collapsible plastic cups to rinse mouth, etc.

ó        Toiletry/shaving kit (very few Big Braves bother to shave)

ó        Kleenex and hand wipes (e.g. Wet Ones)

ó        Sleeping bag and pillow for both Big Brave and child (cabins have plywood or spring bunks with a thin mattress, no pillow)

ó        Pajamas for those who want/use them

ó        Change of clothes (and possible second change for children)

ó        Extra socks and shoes

ó        Swimming suits, towels, shower caps, hair dryer (if we get a pool)

ó

As dictated by weather:

ó        Hats, jacket or coat (we will be outside a great deal of the time, including Saturday night around the Council fire, so bring appropriate clothing to keep you warm and dry)

ó        Hand warmers

ó        Gloves

ó        Umbrella and/or ponchos

ó        Wire clothes hangers (perhaps Blanket to sit on or place over shoulders at Saturday night Council fire

ó        to be left for the next campers?)

ó        Junk food (cookies, crackers, candy, etc.) - remember, "No Mom rules" -- so we get to eat what we want!

ó        Drinks (water, pop, etc.) for washing down the junk food

ó        Your "Algonquin Federation Handbook" (Indian Program guide) to study if there is time to work for a bead

ó        Face paint for Haylushka,

ó        Crayons, Markers, etc. for the Patch contest (full size paper plates for practice?)

ó        Playing cards, small games, etc. for the kids to play during free time (and in bad weather)

ó        Paper towels

ó        Large plastic garbage sacks to help clean up the sleeping area before leaving and also to store clean items if it's muddy out

ó        Carpet squares for the doorway and by the bunks (it can get muddy)

ó        Flashlights (for both) and extra batteries

ó        Camera (disposable?)

ó        Spare bags (nothing ever packs as neatly as it did back home)

ó        Silver duct tape (it's a guy thing)

ó        Cell phone, pager

ó        Cash

ó        Tribal kindling/firewood

ó        Ear plugs (the snoring some women put up with is amazing!)

Chiefs

ó        Headdress

ó        Backup crayons, markers, pencils, paper plates for campout patch competition

ó        Ensure tribal banners and other tribal property arrive

ó        Ensure trophies and ceremonial log arrive

For Winter Camp Out

ó        Hats, mittens/gloves

ó        Shovel in your trunk (in case we get snowed in and for snow sculptures)

ó        Sledding stuff

ó        Snow boots

Added items for Spring Tent Out

ó        Tent (use seam sealer and spray with waterproof/UV-block)

ó        Personal note: There's never enough room, a 6-person or larger tent holds two sleeping bags plus gear (coolers, food boxes, etc.) well

ó        Tent stakes/tie downs

ó        Small mallet and means to pull tent pegs from ground

ó        Ropes, bungee cords

ó        Plastic Tarp/ground cloth (to keep moisture below tent bottom, or cover it if it leaks)

ó        Air mattress or sleeping rolls/mats

ó        Lounge chairs

ó        Lantern, with spare batteries or fuel, funnel, and spare mantels

ó        Fishing rods, hooks, bait

ó        Horseback riding gear (shoes or boots with heels)

ó        FOOD! (REAL food, not just junk food--we're on our own)

ó        Condiments: salt, pepper, spices

ó        Hint: Some braves think cold food (muffins) make a great/quick breakfast

ó        Cooler, ice, beverages, can/bottle opener

ó        Tea kettle/coffee pot

ó        Camp stove and fuel or grill and charcoal and lighter fluid

ó        Matches or log-lighter

ó        Cooking utensils, spatula, serving utensils

ó        Dish soap, scrubber, sponge, dish towels, bucket

Other thoughts

==============

ó        TV/VCR combo, extension cord, movies suitable for the kids

ó        Extension cord and fan if it's going to be very hot (even in a tent)
