on its

Plan to Conduct a Removal Action at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois

After examining the results of environmental investigations for the Fort Sheridan property still under use by the Army, the Navy and the Army Reserves, the Army plans to conduct activities to remove soil contamination from four areas that pose risks to human health and the environment when residential land use scenarios are consid­ered. Federal and state regulators concur with this proposed plan of action. The Army has documented its find­ings in detail in the remedial investigation (RI) and draft final feasibility study (FS) reports for the sites. The proposed removal action sites include Water Tower Soil, Coal Storage Area 4, Building 70, and Vehicle Equipment Storage

30-Day Public Comment Period

The Army welcomes public involvement in this decision-making process by accepting written comments from

January 25, 2002, through February 25, 2002. All mailed comments must be postmarked by February 25, 2002.

After considering public comments, the Army will issue a document called an Action Memorandum, explaining its decision and responding to comments received during the comment period. The Army’s preparing the Action Memorandum in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) to ensure and provide protection of human health and the environment.
