A little history -
The area
The year was 1955; the post World War II home building boom was well under
way. Our area had been farmland for well over 100 years, before that it was
the home of the Potawatomi Indians. The land that is called Dunhurst today,
was a cornfield owned by Techny, a Catholic community located on Waukegan
Road. Wheeling at the time was a community of 1,000 people, it's borders
extended west to Wheeling Road. Wheeling was getting ready to experience the
biggest growth in their history.
Our Homes
Our homes are P&H Homes, factory built by the Harnischfeger Corporation of
Port Washington, Wisconsin, erected by Herzog Construction Company. Herzog
erected Dunhurst Heights at the intersection of Dundee and Elmhurst. They were
built assembly line fashion in only two styles, both bungalows, one floor
plan, choice of brick, siding or cedar shakes exteriors, with plywood sheeting
glued and power nailed to the building studs, our homes are built to last.
Our homes were built with some outstanding features for it's time, G.E.
electric kitchen, built in range and oven, washer, dryer, twin dining area,
gas heat, and large building lot. Additionally, they have "extras" - like the
window wall, sliding door closets, and Rusco windows. Five hundred and fifty,
3 bedrooms, 920 sq. ft. homes were built.
Today
Our neighborhood is family oriented, we take pride in our homes, schools,
churches, neighbors, and our village. Mature trees line curved streets
throughout the area. Our neighborhood is safe due in part to our "Neighborhood
Watch" program.
Our purpose
This home page is for all Dunhurst Neighbors. Send me information about our
neighborhood ( meetings, school doings, church doings, garage sales, general
information, etc., etc. ) and I will see that it is posted.
We want to continue to keep Wheeling a great place to live and work. You can
help, support our local business, churches, and schools. Get involved with
your community. Get out of your homes, meet your neighbor, walk around our
neighborhood. The people of Wheeling are all "good people".
All Wheeling residents are invited to join us at our monthly "Mark Twain
Neighborhood Watch" meeting.
